Community Change Agent
John arises early each morning, thankful for another day, tends to his morning routine – hygiene, breakfast, and some household chores, then marches off to catch the Metro at the boulevard, several blocks away. John travels from Tarzana, through Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys, and Panorama City arriving in Pacoima mid-morning. He makes friends easily and engages other commuters along the way. Once he arrives at the food bank, John is quick to make the rounds, check in, and see what is in need of processing. He has some favorite tasks, but is such a servant he is willing to help wherever he is needed; sorting and packaging breads, cleaning dozens of eggs, gleaning fruits and vegetables, or sweeping and dumping the trash.
Volunteering at the food bank is just one aspect of John’s community involvement. He is an elected official on the Van Nuys Neighborhood Council, active with a local church, and participates in several youth programs to mentor at risk youth. John is always looking for places and activities where he can be a positive change agent. He is currently enrolled in computer training to enhance his skills and enjoys several hobbies – tennis, hiking when he can find a partner to join him, reading, and since joining the food bank team of volunteers more than three years ago, he has a new interest in culinary endeavors. John is a delight to have supporting the warehouse needs and we are very thankful for his commitment.
